Wen Ruibo and Zhou Qihao Exit Early: Tactics and Equipment Analysis 
At the recent Yokohama Champions tournament, several key male players from China, including Wang Chuqin, Liang Jingkun, and Lin Shidong, were absent. Unfortunately, Wen Ruibo and Zhou Qihao suffered first-round losses. Upcoming matches, such as Chen Yuanyu vs. Simon Gauzy and Xiang Peng vs. Sidorenko, promise to be challenging. The question remains: will any Chinese male players make it to the top 16?
Wen Ruibo’s Performance
Wen Ruibo, using a Luma hybrid carbon blade, NEO Blue Hurricane 3 rubber, and DNA Hybrid XH, lost 1-3 to Gustavo Tsuboi. His performance highlighted two main issues:
- Receiving Left-Handed Serves: Wen struggled with returning serves from left-handed players.
- Backhand Offense: While his backhand defense was solid, his backhand attacking lacked power. His backhand flicks often allowed Tsuboi to counter-attack with powerful forehand shots.
Tsuboi’s strategy involved targeting Wen’s backhand and then switching to his forehand for wide angles. Wen often tried to step back to set up for a forehand, but Tsuboi anticipated this and adjusted his shot placement accordingly.
Wen’s Luma hybrid carbon blade is similar to the Viscaria but with a slightly harder feel. It requires more power to play effectively, making it less suitable for players with less strength. 
Zhou Qihao’s Performance
Zhou Qihao, wielding the Double Fish Project Z blade, NEO Blue Hurricane 3, and D09c rubber, lost 1-3 to Hiroto Murakami. Each game was decided by a narrow margin of two points.
Murakami’s forehand D09c rubber allowed him to play aggressive loops without excessive spin. His overall game speed and shot transitions were noticeably faster than Zhou’s. Despite Zhou’s efforts, the skill gap was evident.
Zhou’s backhand flicks often resulted in Murakami easily countering with powerful forehand shots to wide angles. The lack of penetration in Zhou’s strokes was a significant factor in his defeat. 
Equipment Insights
Murakami’s equipment choices are worth noting. He uses a special edition Butterfly Viscaria blade with D09c rubber on both sides. This setup provides a balance of speed and control, allowing for aggressive play.
On the other hand, Wen Ruibo’s Luma hybrid carbon blade and Zhou Qihao’s Double Fish Project Z blade, while both Korean-made, offer different playing characteristics. The Luma is harder and requires more power, while the Project Z is softer and more flexible, making it easier to play with. 
Personal Equipment Experience
I recently tried the Butterfly Viscaria Gold with Tenergy 05 on the forehand. The blade feels hard and requires significant power to play effectively. However, it offers excellent spin and arc at lower power levels. At full power, it delivers impressive speed, penetration, and power. 
Overall, the match highlighted the importance of equipment choice and playing style. While both Wen and Zhou showed effort, their equipment and tactics were not enough to overcome their opponents’ strengths.
