Originally published 2023-11-04 · Translated & republished with permission

Model: Sanwei Blue Marlin Pro, the Deep-Sea Blade

Structure: 5 wood + 2 carbon (limba + ayous + LD stretched carbon + kiri/paulownia)

Specs: 6.2 plus or minus 0.1mm, light weight

Handle: FL, ST, CS (shakehand + penhold)

Positioning: A seven-ply attacking carbon blade, suited to players from beginner to intermediate, for a mid-to-close-table fast-attack loop style.

Performance Traits

The Blue Marlin blade is made by Beijing’s Sanwei company using a special LD stretched carbon and thickened wood, giving the blade sharp attacking power while also keeping a soft, controllable feel. It truly achieves “springy but not stiff,” with a lively, agile feel. Priced at 228 yuan.

Inspiration

A body like the blue sea, a bill like a long spear. The Atlantic Blue Marlin, whose name comes from the Greek for “short sword,” is one of the fastest fish in the ocean.

Design Background

Designed in collaboration with professional art-school designers in Beijing and Shenzhen. The blue-and-white tail logo mimics a fish shape, the deep-blue handle represents the Atlantic blue sea, and one side of the handle is branded with a “dynamo fish” mark, symbolizing its fierce character and sharp edge (a fame that traces back to The Old Man and the Sea).

After repeated testing, I’ve picked the setups that suit the Blue Marlin Pro blade best:

Option 1 (Standard): Blue Marlin Pro Forehand Arthur China (a domestic tacky cake sponge) + GEWO Grape 450 (German high-density). The best pairing idea: good value, strong performance, around 520 yuan.

Option 2 (Budget): Blue Marlin Pro Forehand: Jupiter 3 / Hurricane 3 / Arthur China, etc. (budget domestic rubbers). Backhand: Sanwei Nano Gear / 729 Faint / Yinhe Moon 12, etc. (budget cake sponges). A budget choice that balances control and springiness, around 390 to 450 yuan. You can later upgrade the backhand to the Grape, a perfect match.

Option 3 (Outer Rubbers): Blue Marlin Pro Outer rubbers on both sides, such as GEWO Grape 450 (German high-density). Crisp, clear feel, easily showing off speed and offensive advantages. Around 600 yuan or under.

PS: Everything in the Mushroom Field Guide is my own subjective impression. Rubbers vary from sheet to sheet, and blade pairing changes things too. Comments and corrections welcome.
