Budget Alternatives to Flagship Blades and Rubbers (Part 1)

A single question can have many different answers, depending on where you’re standing. So when I list these budget alternatives, you may well disagree with me — our priorities might just not be the same. Consider this a starting point, not a final word.

A budget alternative, simply put, is something cheaper that performs similarly.

Budget alternatives: K2, National Standard 3, Hyper Power AMG. The Beidou 5 mentioned at the end of this article is widely seen as a slightly springier Hurricane 8.

For boosted Hurricane — whether it’s provincial or national team spec, once it’s fully soaked through, most recreational players (myself included) can’t really tell the difference.

Tibhar’s K2 has a high-tack topsheet, unlike the K2 Pro’s semi-tack. Some players absolutely depend on that tacky surface — they don’t have much raw power but need to be able to brush up backspin. K2 is excellent at that. It’s also genuinely an energy-in rubber with decent spin. There’s a certain unhurried quality to it — a consistent rhythm and pace, and a somewhat average depth of feel. But for recreational players who treat it as a stand-in for boosted Hurricane, adapting is easy.

National Standard 3 uses a nearly identical white-crepe rubber compound, so when you play with it you get a similar pause-like sensation at contact — that topsheet-drag feeling — similar to Hurricane. The sponge also has solid energy-in performance.

Hyper Power AMG’s topsheet is a touch less tacky than Hurricane 3. But look at the sponge and it appears completely oil-soaked. When looping with it, the energy build-up feels great — you can treat it as a non-boosted product with no reservations. Unlike the original Hyper Power, this AMG version has been pre-treated with boosting during production, so the power steps up a notch. On my custom PLC blade, I’ve had two energy-in tacky rubbers that I’ve really liked: previously Hyper Power AMG, now K3 VIP.

One note on the AMG: try not to peel it off once it’s on, because the sponge curls badly when removed and getting it flat again to re-glue is a hassle.

Budget alternatives: V greater than 15 Sticky, DNA Dragon Grip.

There are some semi-tack outer rubbers that aren’t really budget alternatives — some players even consider them superior to D09C. For sheer brute power, Dynasty ZGR and K2 Pro are both semi-tack energy-in rubbers, but they’re clearly stronger and springier than D09C.

Today, though, let’s talk about options with similar performance characteristics. The first is V greater than 15 Sticky. Its topsheet isn’t all that similar to D09C’s, but there’s a lot it can accomplish functionally. The sponge offers solid ball-wrapping and high forgiveness, making it extremely consistent. On the backhand it’s smooth and forgiving. Power isn’t its strong suit, but as a D09C alternative on the backhand it’s excellent — stable as a rock. It’s also energy-in with good spring speed.

The second is DNA Dragon Grip. Rebound ability is a step lower, so it really wants a harder, springier blade — pair it with a soft inner-carbon blade and it’ll feel underpowered. But as a D09C alternative, the similarities are there: the Dragon Grip’s topsheet grip is very solid, making it easy to generate strong spin.
