Insights into the Equipment Choices of the Yokohama Champions Semi-Finalists
The upcoming men’s singles semi-finals at the Yokohama Champions tournament promise to be intriguing, particularly in terms of the equipment choices made by the players. 
Match 1: Woo Jun Cheong vs. Shinozuka Daichi
Woo Jun Cheong is known for using a TIBHAR blade, the Neo Blue Hurricane 3 rubber on his forehand, and the MK Pro on his backhand (though the latter is subject to some uncertainty). 
Shinozuka Daichi, on the other hand, plays with a custom Butterfly Timo Boll ALC blade, the D09c rubber on his forehand, and the Z03 on his backhand. The key point of interest here is how Woo Jun Cheong’s game will be affected by his switch from the K3 Pro to the Blue Hurricane 3 on his forehand. While speed is currently the dominant trend in table tennis, the Hurricane 3 still offers notable advantages in terms of spin, rhythm changes, and arc capabilities, albeit with a bit more effort required.
The Evolution of Shinozuka Daichi
Since the Japanese men’s team transitioned to coach Kishikawa Seiya in March 2025, there has been a noticeable improvement in the performance of their key players, including Shinozuka Daichi. His playing style has evolved from the days of Mizutani Jun, who was known for his exceptional touch and preference for playing from a distance. Shinozuka Daichi has increased his offensive threat and now plays more aggressively, relying less on touch and more on attacking from the front of the table. His recent 4-2 victory over Felix demonstrates his significant progress.
Match 2: The Battle of the Japanese Titans
Matsushima Kaito plays with a custom Butterfly Fan Zhendong ALC blade, the D09c rubber on his forehand, and the Z03 on his backhand. 
Zhang Benzhihe uses the Butterfly Zhang Benzhihe SALC blade with Z03 rubber on both sides. 
Interestingly, all five of Japan’s top male players, including Uta Koki and Uda Yukiya, currently use the Z03 rubber on their backhand. This rubber is challenging to master but aligns with the current trend of increased speed, especially on the backhand side. The trend is clear, and it will be interesting to see how the Chinese national team adapts to this development.
The Versatility of the Z03 Rubber
Initially, Fan Zhendong was not particularly impressed with the Z03 rubber. However, his current setup includes the Butterfly Fan Zhendong ALC blade, the Z03, and the D09c. There are rumors that he is experimenting with using the Z03 on both sides. It will be fascinating to see what configuration he chooses for his upcoming Bundesliga debut on August 22nd.
The Z03 rubber, when paired with an outer-layer blade, benefits from the blade’s fiber, making it easier to play through compared to inner-layer blades. The core principle of equipment usage remains that the equipment must effectively complement the player’s style to be considered advanced.
