Fan Zhendong Uses Butterfly ZYRE-03: What Does It Tell Us?
In the Champions League men’s team semifinal, Fan Zhendong — with ZYRE-03 on his forehand — swept Ledziewicz 3-0 and led his Saarbrucken squad to a 3-0 win, advancing to the final.
The Grand Slam champion who once described ZYRE-03 as a “garbage rubber” is now using it himself in a high-stakes semifinal (forehand Z03, backhand D09c). How do you make sense of that?
It is clear proof that even a top star’s understanding of equipment keeps evolving.
1. A Word About the Opponent
Ledziewicz is not a pushover. At last October’s WTT China Smash, Wang Chuqin needed five games to edge him in the round of 64. At the time Ledziewicz was using a blade with inner ZLC construction (apparently released this year) with K3 Pro on both sides.
2. What Does Fan Zhendong’s Success with Z03 Demonstrate?
First, players of this caliber have enough skill to bridge most equipment gaps.
We have seen plenty of examples: Wang Chuqin and Liang Jingkun moved from outer Viscaria to a 968-type construction. Chen Xingtong went from Viscaria in 2019 to Harimoto ALC, then in 2020 to the gold-logo Viscaria, in 2022 to Lin Gaoyuan ZLC, and from 2023 onward to the W968 — different fibers, inner versus outer, and she adapted to all of them. Fan Zhendong’s teammate Franziska is practically a rubber-switching enthusiast: D05, D09c, Z03 — forehand and backhand swapped around as the moment requires. Semifinals and knockouts can carry different combinations. It barely affects his results.
Fan Zhendong is operating the same way now in European competition. Forehand blue provincial Hurricane with backhand D09c, occasionally switching sides. Or both sides D09c. This time forehand Z03 with backhand D09c — adjusting to the table and balls of each venue.
When ability is deep enough and your skill level is a tier above, equipment has far less influence. The best way to test equipment fit is against a peak opponent. But if your ability is high enough, it barely matters. Fan Zhendong has naturally gifted feel and strong adaptive control.
Years ago, Ma Long once used a Yinhe blade at the Super League as a last-minute replacement for his 968 and still dismantled opponents with ease.
For us as recreational players: is there a takeaway? Maybe not. We just need to understand the two sheets of rubber we are currently playing with.
For a lot of players, keeping the rubber consistent — even more than the blade — is what matters most. Feel adaptation is not that difficult.
3. Will ZYRE-03 Sales Spike?
Of course. Even if it is temporary.
When a top star uses a rubber, people follow. He used D09c on his forehand and everyone trusted it. Now that he is using Z03 on his forehand, plenty of players will at least want to try it.
But ultimately, you have to ask yourself. If you want richer spin variation, Hurricane or D09c are better choices. If your game is straightforward and aggressive, Z03’s dwell and speed are genuinely good. For forehand use, it does favor certain blades — currently soft outer-carbon blades seem to be the better fit.
