WTT Yokohama Champions: Wang Yidi Defeats Ito Mima, Kuai Man and Chen Yi Advance to Round of 16

WTT Yokohama Champions: Wang Yidi Defeats Ito Mima, Kuai Man and Chen Yi Advance to Round of 16 On August 5th, the second day of the WTT Yokohama Champions saw the continuation of the women’s and men’s singles Round of 32 matches, with Kuai Man, Chen Yi, and Wang Yidi all advancing to the Round of 16.

Women’s Singles

Kuai Man secured a 3-0 victory against the Indian player Batra. Kuai Man quickly found her rhythm, taking the first game 11-1, which set the tone for the match. She went on to win the next two games 11-7, 11-7, advancing to the next round.

Kuai Man commented after the match: “I had recently faced Batra in Slovenia, and she is a tricky long pips player. Having played her recently, I was able to execute my tactics confidently from the start. Although she played some good shots in the third game and I felt a bit anxious, I managed to stay calm when trailing and adjusted my game point by point.” She emphasized the importance of rhythm when playing against players with unconventional styles, stating, “Especially the judgment of spin, which is also about rhythm. Since it was the first match, I prepared a lot in this aspect.” In the Round of 16, Kuai Man will face Romania’s Szocs, who staged a comeback to defeat Egypt’s Hanna Goda 3-2.

Chen Yi won a hard-fought 3-2 victory against South Korea’s Lee Eun-hye. Lee took an early lead by winning the first two games 12-10, 12-10. However, Chen Yi gradually found her form, winning the next three games 11-3, 12-10, 11-3 to complete the comeback.

Chen Yi reflected on her performance: “It’s great to win, but I felt some discomfort in my neck and thoracic spine before the match and didn’t train much. In the first two games, I struggled with my game, especially in the early exchanges. In the third game, I made some changes to my serve, which helped me gain the upper hand in the attacking rallies. I felt the game open up a bit after that.” During the fourth game, Chen Yi called for a medical timeout. “I was already feeling a bit hesitant to move, and after the point at 6-7, which was a long rally, I felt it was necessary to call a timeout. I didn’t think too much at that moment; I just focused on getting the ball on the table and leaving the difficult shots to my opponent. My tactic was to focus on consistency, getting the ball on the table, and making sure I returned as many balls as possible.” Chen Yi will next face Japan’s Zhang Benzhihe, who defeated Horikawa Hashimoto 3-2 in today’s match.

In another match, Wang Yidi defeated Japan’s Ito Mima 3-1. Ito took the first game 11-8, but Wang Yidi took control from the second game, winning 11-1, 11-9, 11-3 to secure the victory.

“It had been half a year since I last faced Ito, and I didn’t anticipate her spin well enough at the start, which led to several mistakes on my part during her pushes. After adjusting in the second game, I became more patient and determined.” Wang Yidi noted, “Ito probably wanted to engage in more backspin exchanges, but I tried to turn it into topspin rallies. After winning a long rally in the second game, I felt more confident and my shots became more assertive.” In the next round, Wang Yidi will face Taiwan’s Zheng Yi-ching, who defeated Romania’s Samara 3-1. Wang Yidi commented, “She’s a smart player and an old opponent, so I need to prepare more thoroughly and fight for every point.”
